Overview

The Laboratory Manager assists the Pathologist and Operations Manager in planning objectives and scope of the hospital/medical center laboratory services. Lab Manager supervises daily activities, including proper staffing levels, to ensure accuracy, quality, and timeliness of services. The Lab Manager may be required to act as technical consultant for technical and scientific oversight of the outreach lab.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the daily activities of the laboratory to ensure quality services are rendered in an efficient and timely manner
  • Maintains and assists with continual compliance as required by standards of accrediting or regulatory agencies
  • Develops and maintains department policy and procedure manuals.  May evaluate and implement new procedures as directed
  • Establishes and monitors the standards of accuracy, precision and efficiency in performance of laboratory tests or the operation of equipment.  Takes corrective action and documents results
  • Assures compliance with laboratory safety and infection control policies
  • Assures Guidelines and Compliance Policies are implemented and followed
  • Assists with recruiting efforts and handles and/or participates in the termination process as required
  • Monitors employee performance, completes and conducts periodic evaluations, counsels and disciplines as necessary in accordance with Guidelines
  • Oversees or prepares employee schedules, approves timesheets, approves and monitors PTO to ensure availability to effectively handle daily activities
  • Continuously trains and updates team on new policies/procedures and other information
  • Develops positive relationships with employees, system’s supervisors and managers, physicians and outside contacts.  Promotes a team effort within the department and supports the same effort system-wide.  Must have a willingness to implement new procedures and comply with new policies
  • Maintains high level of proficiency and current knowledge of trends in laboratory medicine.  Provides clinical orientation on new equipment and methodology and coordinates continuing education and in-services for staff with Education Coordinator. 
  • Directs the preparation of department reports as required by corporate management
  • Directs age appropriate care for the patient population.  Oversees clinical testing that   produces laboratory results for use by the health care team in the assessment and treatment of the patient
  • Correlates clinical information and/or previous lab results to evaluate the validity of current results.  Reports results accordingly
  • Maintains strict HIPAA confidentiality in all situations and with all documentation
  • Maintains consistent and reliable attendance and complies with company guidelines on attendance
  • Monitors financial reports to meet company financial goals
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Physical Capabilities 

  • Light to moderate physical effort
  • Occasional carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects; lifting of up to 50 lbs may be required
  • Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching
  • Must be able to hear, see, and respond adequately
  • Frequent prolonged standing, walking, sitting, and bending over.
  • Use of hands and fingers

Working Environment

  • Air conditioned laboratory environment
  • Frequent exposure to video display terminals
  • Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), biohazardous body fluids, and occasional hazardous chemicals
  • Sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distraction
  • May be asked to work extended hours

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in medical technology or related science from an accredited program
  • Current certification or registration as a Medical Technologist such as ASCP
  • Valid and current State of Hawaii license as a Medical Technologist
  • Minimum five (5) years clinical laboratory experience and minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience in a hospital/commercial lab setting.  The Medical Director may use discretion in assignment of managerial position to an individual with less than 5 years of experience
  • Strong computer skills (word and Excel) and knowledge in lab information systems required
  • Proven leadership, decision-making, and organizational skills
  • For hospital settings, additional requirements may apply and change without notice, including, but not limited to, criminal background check, health clearance and hospital compliance training
  • Familiarity with histology, cytology, flow cytometry and toxicology is desirable
  • Successfully pass Company pre-employment drug test and periodic and random thereafter
