  • Overview

    Under limited supervision, performs variety of duties pertaining to preparation of tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, sectioning, mounting on glass slides and staining for microscopic examination and analysis by Pathologist. Plans and schedules work and trains assigned subordinates.

    Responsibilities

    • Assists the Histology Supervisor in overseeing the technical accuracy and updates the Standard Operating Procedures of the Histology Laboratory as required by State and Federal accreditation agencies.
    • Organizes a large and varied daily workload, accommodating priority requests, focusing on immediate tasks despite interruptions.
    • Processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by using appropriate methods for fixing, embedding, sectioning, staining and mounting. Reviews methods and implements changes if required.
    • Prepares reagents and stains to meet departmental quality standards.
    • Consults with Pathologists regarding difficult analysis or abnormal findings.
    • Maintains open communication with supervisor, pathologists, and co-workers to ensure optimal operation of the department.
    • Develops high level of proficiency. Updates knowledge through; literature and available resources. Participates in examinations to test proficiency.
    • Provides and records instrument Preventive Maintenance. Troubleshoots instrumentation, monitors quality control of staining /processing methods, uses alternate methods when appropriate and refers problems to supervisor or pathologists as needed.
    • Practices strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures, laboratory safety and infection control policies.
    • Performs and oversees immunohistochemical testing and related procedures including immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase procedures.
    • Provides proper labeling and storage of all reagents.
    • Ensures accurate patient information, accession numbers and records on all surgical, autopsy and bone marrow specimens.
    • Cleans laboratory glass and plastic ware as needed, adhering to defined procedures of cleaning.
    • Resolves discrepancies or omissions in patient/clinical information.
    • Plans and schedules daily employees work, vacations, and sick coverage.
    • Assists the supervisor in training newly hired employees.
    • Serves as a team player and a role model for other employees in the company by always exhibiting traits of courtesy, caring, helpfulness, and respect.
    • Adheres to confidentiality, safety, compliance, and legal requirements.
    • Maintains consistent and reliable attendance and complies with company guidelines on attendance.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Physical Capabilities 

    • Occasional carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects; and lifting of up to 50 lbs may be required
    • Frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching
    • Must be able to hear, see, and respond adequately
    • Frequent prolonged standing, walking, sitting, and bending over
    • Use of hands and fingers

    Working Environment

    • Air conditioned laboratory environment
    • Frequent exposure to video display terminals
    • Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), bio-hazardous body fluids, and occasional hazardous chemicals
    • Sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distraction
    • May be asked to work extended hours

    Qualifications

    • Associate’s Degree in health science or related field.
    • Current and valid Histology Technician/Technologist Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
    • Minimum five (5) years histology experience.
    • Computer literate including familiarity with lab information systems.
    • Passes company drug testing program pre-hire and there after on a periodic and/or random basis.
    • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, decision making and customer service skills.
    • Excellent English communication (verbal and written) skills, including by telephone.
