  • Overview

    The Courier Senior follows an established schedule transporting specimens, testing supplies, and test results via motor vehicle assigned by the company.  Assigns courier routes and oversees daily delivery and pick-up operations.  Trains new couriers as assigned.  May prepare and pack specimens for dangerous goods shipping in accordance with all laws and regulations.

    Responsibilities

    Under general supervision and in accordance with Company policies, procedures and guidelines, this position:

     

    • Follows an assigned route for the safe transportation of laboratory specimens from client facilities to clinical laboratory while observing all traffic laws
    • Assigns couriers to routes and oversees daily delivery and pick-up operations
    • Trains couriers on new routes and is responsible for their efficiency and effectiveness
    • Delivers specimen collection supplies and test result reports to clients
    • Packs medical lab specimens/correspondence into appropriate cooler/boxes with consideration given to temperature and bio-hazardous safety precautions
    • Follows established Company guidelines for a preventive vehicle maintenance schedule and coordination of repairs and maintains service records
    • Exhibits an efficient and appropriate time-management schedule in performing all routes
    • Sorts and files laboratory reports by route location for deliveries
    • Transports bank deposit bags between lab locations and various bank branches
    • Schedules and assists with special projects, moving lab equipment, records, and furniture between locations
    • May be directed to assist technologists in trash removal and other functions of the laboratory
    • May prepare and pack specimens for dangerous goods shipping completing all documentation as required
    • Meets regularly with the Courier Supervisor and responds to Client Alerts in a timely manner.  Assists the Courier Supervisor in creating and updating courier orientation program, check-off lists, and make recommendations regarding route changes
    • Adheres to established safety and company policies along with federal and state regulated compliance issues
    • Maintains consistent and reliable attendance and complies with Company guidelines on attendance
    • Performs all other duties as assigned

    Physical Capabilities 

    • Requires sitting and operating company vehicles periodically and for periods up to 10 hours
    • Moderate to heavy physical effort (lift/carry up to 50 lbs)
    • Frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching
    • Frequent prolonged standing/sitting, walking
    • Must be able to see, hear and respond adequately
    • Occasional exposure to video display terminals
    • Extensive use of hands and fingers
    • Extensive use of telephone
    • Extensive use of specimen/package tracking system 

    Working Environment 

    • Air conditioned/heated warehouse environment
    • Frequent exposure to bio-hazardous material
    • Sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distraction
    • May be asked to work extended hours, holidays and weekends

    Qualifications

    • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent required
    • Knowledgeable with island communities and rural/remote areas
    • Possess a valid and current Hawaii driver’s license
    • Presents and maintains a driving record which meets the standard of the Company’s insurance carrier
    • Able to operate standard and automatic shift vehicles
    • Able to utilize hand trucks/carts, typewriter, computers, and specimen/package tracking systems
    • For hospital settings, additional requirements may apply and change without notice, including, but not limited to, criminal background check, health clearance and hospital compliance training
    • Successfully pass Company pre-employment drug test and periodic and random thereafter
